Today’s mental workout for superheroes Tuesdays inducts the comedy group that changed the world, at least the part that was paying any attention, the Monty Python cast. No matter what part of the world you happen to be in, there’s a Monty Python sketch you can identify with or is about folks like you, either way it still brings a laugh. That’s what humor should be about, including ability to laugh at oneself, but even better, laugh at others doing silly things, very silly things. Life is indeed way too short to waste precious time wondering if humor is stepping over boundaries. After all, we are human beings, we have conquered the Earth and space, well at least about .000001 of the galaxy, give or take a decimal point.

Monty Python’s wide range of surreal satire was electrifying enough to jolt even the master of comedy himself, Aristophanes out of his grave, such was the quality of their work. Some of their skits: “dead parrot,” “Spanish Inquisition” “cheese shop” "spam" continue to be cult favorites among the parents of the generation who have absolutely no clue what we are talking about. The true test of comedy is longevity. Of course it helps if your material is human behavior, that tends to stay fairly constant for thousands of years. Their movies rank in numerous ‘best ever' lists. The Monty crew were the Beatles of comedy, all geniuses within their own right, absolutely no weak links among the cast of Chapman, Cleese, Idle, Palin, Jones and Gilliam.

Comedy exudes the much craved freedom of expression that so many individuals long for, isn’t that what life should be about. The ability to express oneself and spread substance that attracts the trained ear is a remarkable gift. The Monty Python cast accomplished more because they tried more. It takes courage to stretch new boundaries that most minds have never travelled before. There can be no doubt how many millions of neurons they stimulated. They had a unique ability to deliver perfect timing between punch lines deliberate or delayed with exceptional chemistry amongst the group. People underestimate the rhythm of comedy, extraordinary comedic improvisation requires mostly art, but that dose of perfect science propels it over the top.

We actually do no justice referring to the cast as just a comedy crew, they were much more than that. They transcended the very limits of how we perceive life. They influenced pop culture and revolutionized the entire concept of audience entertainment. They were innovators and were a precursor to Saturday night live. If one laughs, it makes a big difference if they laugh just a little or if they laugh themselves almost to death. As far as we know nobody’s ever died laughing, there’s probably no better way to cheat the hangman. Laughing is great for your heart and soul, it will send rich blood to power your immune system and keep your brain smiling. Today’s mental workout is to laugh out loud to your favorite Monty Python skit, if you don’t have one, now is the time to give your ears and eyes some caviar, remember always laugh on the bright side of life. Let’s remember a farewell toast to Mr. Chapman wherever he rests. As always, make it a hilarious mental workout.
